THE #1 TIP TO HELP YOU FIND BALANCE IN HANDSTAND

Full handstand Inspiro yoga.JPG

Wanna know the most common mistake I see in students practising handstand?

Here’s a little exercise, to give you an idea.

  1. Place your hands on a flat surface, shoulder width apart.

  2. Keep the hands completely flat, pressing the base/root of your fingers all the way down.

  3. As you keep the hands firm and solid like this. Can you bring any kind of movement into your palms?

  4. Now keep the hands like they are but lift the base/root of your fingers slightly (about 1/2 cm). Can you bring any movement into your palms now?

I’m curious to hear your answers!

My wish behind this little exercise is for you to understand that…

“IN ORDER TO FIND BALANCE THERE NEEDS TO BE MOVEMENT.”

Now let’s put this principle into the practice of handstand.

  1. Place your yoga mat with the short edge of the mat next to the wall.

  2. Go into downward facing dog with the hands about 10 cm away form the wall. Index finger pointing forward.

  3. Walk the feet forwards until you have the shoulders on top of the wrists.

  4. Lift one leg up

  5. Bend the bottom leg

  6. Kick up and bring both legs to the wall

  7. Bring one foot off the wall and then the other - try to find balance on both of your hands!

What happens?! The hands want to move right?

YES! Allow them to move and thats gonna help you keep the balance!

This is called Hasta Bandha - the ”lock” of the hands - drawing energy towards the center of the palm, creating a little lift.

Good luck with your practice and let me know how it goes!
