YOGA TEACHER GUIDE: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR YOGA SHALA FOR TEACHING
Preparing Your Yoga Space for Class
As a yoga teacher, creating a calm and inviting space for your students is essential. This not only enhances their experience but also ensures that you show up as your best self.
People invest their time and money in coming to class, so it’s crucial for me to show up in a professional, prepared, and inspired way.
I think we can all agree that the last thing you want to do is show up last minute and without a plan on what to teach, right?
My Yoga Shala Prep-Checklist
Arrive on Time: Being punctual sets a professional tone and gives you ample time to prepare the space without rushing. It also shows respect for the people coming to your class.
Check Lighting, Heating, and/or Ventilation: If needed, open up windows for some fresh air.
Check Speaker, Adjust Sound, Connect Bluetooth: Consider having some music on when people come in. Ensure your phone is on "Do Not Disturb," flight mode, and silent.
Place Out Props for Your Students: Arrange props to help students know where to place their mats and to keep the shala organized.
Set Up Your Teaching Spot: Prepare your mat and notes, a block/bolster to sit on, and any other props you’ll need to demo. Have something to drink on hand.
Place Out Essential Oils, Gong/Bells/Other Instruments, Poem and/or Quote: These are things I like to use in my classes; only use them if they resonate with you.
Light Some Palo Santo, Incense, and/or Place Out Fresh Flowers.
Look Over Your Sequence and Practice the Main Flow: Warm up your body for the poses you’ll demo.
Ground Yourself: Take a few moments to center yourself and connect with your breath.
Do you have other things you do before setting up for teaching? I’d love to hear your little tips and tricks - please share in the comments!
Much love and happy teaching!
