NAZA’S 2 TOP TRICKS TO PRACTICE HANDSTAND WITH A WALL
2 SIMPLE Ways to work towards handstand with the wall
Handstands are an incredible way to build strength, improve balance, and have fun with your yoga practice.
I (Naza) personally love to get upside down and it’s something that comes very easy to me (especially as I grew up practicing martial arts) but I totally understand this isn’t the case for most people.
If you're new to handstands, using the wall for support can make the process safer and more manageable.
In this post, I'll share my top 2 tips for practicing handstands with the help of a wall. These are tips I always share in my inversion workshop at our yoga retreats and I hope you’ll find them useful too.
These techniques will help you build confidence and stability as you work towards mastering the handstand.
Let's get started!
Exercise #1: Walk the Legs Up the Wall
Start by measuring the distance from the wall. This distance should be the length of your leg.
Turn around and place your hands on the floor where your feet were. This ensures the right distance from the wall.
Begin walking your legs up the wall.
Keep one leg on the wall parallel to the floor and lift the other leg up in the air.
Slowly release the leg that is touching the wall to practice balancing on your hands.
Start with small releases and gradually increase as you feel more confident.
Remember, a strong core helps maintain balance and control.
Don’t forget to breathe deeply and evenly ;)
Exercise 2: Kick Up to the Wall
Place your hands about 10 cm away from the wall.
Start in a downward dog pose and walk your feet closer to your hands until your shoulders are over your wrists.
Lift one leg up to the sky. Bend the leg that’s on the floor and lift your gaze towards the wall.
Begin to kick up (kicking your butt with the bent leg) until your top leg touches the wall.
Try to hold the position and lower your gaze between your hands, keeping one leg on the wall and the other leg up in the air.
Work on your balance by gently releasing the leg that’s on the wall.
